@jo clear… with boyfriends it works, but for dogs that’s excellent advice! I know of a shelter dog who got adopted by a visiting politician because she was trembling and looking totally hopeless.. as the politician had not capacity and time for the dog, she said immediately she would be a present for her daughter (it was an older german shephard bitch, very sweet, but quite large and all that). Later she told me, that immediately in the car, the dog stopped the shivering and became a normal happy dog, never looked back, so to say… and yes: the adoption worked out. (A good daughter knows when to be a good daughter)
I’ve had about 5 rescue dogs by now, and I think, once in my car, each knew its problems were over. Usually they have that immediate change from will you keep me? to I’M HOME!
Rescue dogs are wonderful. But you are right, Jerry, not the best gift – better to get yourself. Our best dog we rescued off the street. He was 6 weeks old, had fleas, parvo, had fireworks tied to him and was poisoned. The vet said he wasn’t going to make it. He is now 9 years old and the healthiest and sweetest dog you could ever hope for – and the handsomest Lab mix. My hubby had a lot of experience with dogs or that vet would have been right. We have gotten another dog out of a shelter to keep him company… it has been an adventure!
These strips where they they aren’t adopted over and over again make me sad. :( I mean, I know if one of them got adopted, it would change the strip but still….
Great comments all…good stories. My pup is a former shelter dog. He immediately changed from a cringing pup to a happy playful one. 7 yrs later we grow closer daily…AND he adores my 3 cats….2 of whom he helped raise from tiny kittens…1 sleeps with him…it’s the cutest thing.
