I worked Maintenance for most of a Decade, can’t tell you HOW many times I’ve patched drywall. Yes, that is how it’s SUPPOSED to go. It never DOES, but it’s SUPPOSED to be that easy.

    We’ll see how Paul does!

My wife actually got to be pretty good at it. But I never had the patience.

That works if there’s a stud behind it. There never is, so cut some drywall to a shape that can fit into the hole sideways, drill two holes in it. Pull a string between the two holes. Put elmer’s glue on the sides of the drywall, put it in the hole and position it to cover the edges of the hole as well as possible. take the two strings and tie them to a pencil ( may need a dowel or ruler if it’s a big hole), twirl the pencil around until it’s good and tight. Then the next day, you remove the string and pencil and you have a depression to fill with drywall compound.paint and you’re done.
