The Origin of the word cliffhanger is…. The term ‘cliffhanger’ may have originated with Thomas Hardy’s serial novel A Pair of Blue Eyes in 1873. At the time newspapers published novels in a serial format with one chapter appearing every month.www.princeton.edu/~achaney/tmve/wiki100k/docs/Cliffhanger.html

The word “cliffhanger” originated from the film serials “The Perils of Pauline”, one episode ended with the heroine actually hanging from a cliff and the term was born.
