According to a park ranger who I once heard speak, if a Canada goose gets shot down from the migration, its mate will come down with it. If they manage to escape the hunter and his dogs and live through getting winged, they’ll make their nest somewhere in the vicinity where they came down. Ever after, their offspring will come back to that place to roost. Explains why their habitat seems to be all over the place. Just don’t step in it.
