Hey, Folks! Payne and I are full-blown political opposites, but we ARE both “car nuts” of certain stripes, though he seems to favor big Detroit iron, and I like smaller-fast and nimble!
His point here may not be “political”, but it certainly makes a valid point about our social “acceptance” of some really stupid technology, that further removes “people” from responsibility for their actions, or just plain ignorance. Cars that warn of an accident ahead with radar? Expensive, but it is another step in making drivers LESS attentive to the road! That some systems will now APPLY THE BRAKES for you???NO THANK YOU!
Payne has shown time and again that he sees personal responsibility, whether driving a car, or a path to war, cannot be pushed aside. On that, I agree with him!
The first Pontiac Firebird, at the GM Autorama in 1955 projected a turbine-engined car, running on along a copper strip in the highway, with a “computer” running things, while the human “driver” played cards with the family on their long trip!
Technology, even from Mercedes Benz, who DO build great cars, that replaces the driver’s responsibilities to be skillful, is dangerous. And yes, when the Airbus went down of Venezuela, it was a matter of putting too much trust in the computer. It appears the latest crash at SFO might have been a similar reliance on “tech”, rather than the human brain!
