    No kidding. We city folk know better than to go swimming in water that has brain-eating microbes and blood-sucking worms. Besides, there’s enough chlorine in a public pool to kill anything that floats.

    Back in my hometown, so many geese live in the local pond that it’s been closed indefinitely due to being a health hazard.

    @Ned Snipes

    He said the High School wasn’t air conditioned until 2009. He said nothing about still being there himself.

    AshburnStadium: Our part of town had a couple of mayors and the head of the (private) utility company, but we weren’t considered rich enough to rate a swimming pool.

    I took a water quality class in college. For the class project I compared bacterial counts from different water sources, including the duck and goose covered town pond. Let’s just say everything was clean compared to that. Then I put the nasty water the geese had used through different water purifiers. One of the filters I used had to be thrown away afterwards.

    You find seaweed in the ocean, not a lake.

    So, tell us the anecdote! You remind me of a line from the late, lamented TV show Laugh-In: “And then there’s the joke about the priest and the rabbi. It is a goodie.”

    Lorenzo Browncoat: And whale vomit is so valuable it has its own name – ambergris, and is used in expensive perfumes.
