Jerome's grandpa: Back in the early part of the 20th century, a sports cartoonist, Tad Dorgan, was at a baseball game, listening to vendors selling sausages in a bun by yelling "get your hot Dachsunds!" Dorgan wanted to work that into one of his cartoons. He wasn't sure how to spell "Dachsunds," so he just wrote "hot dogs." THOMAS ALOYSIUS “Tad” DORGAN (1877-1929). Cartoonist. Born in San Francisco, CA on April 29, 1877. A childhood accident removed three fingers on his right hand and his hopes for becoming a boxer. For manual therapy, he took up line illustration which soon led him to becoming one of the most widely read, left-handed newspaper artists in the U.S.

Grampa Oliver (Oliver is the family’s last name), is a fan of the fictional minor league baseball team the “Wingnuts.”
