Let’s see… If you were making gasoline you could spend a billion dollars to build a refinery so that you could lower the price of gas and make less money!
Gas prices in Europe are much higher than in the USA, but public transportation is much more efficient as well. Oil is a finite product and humans need to find another way to power our vehicles. Helping to reduce traffic congestion would go a long way to reducing usage, pollution, and would help keep prices low and get people to and from work much faster. There are many other ideas but no will to experiment with them in our country. I miss 54cents a gallon gas. I remember 27cents a gallon gas. Those days are gone. I wish I could afford a Tesla. /sighRespectfully,C.

The gas spikes are proof of a monopoly, not capitalism as it should work. If it were actual capitalism, then one company would lower their prices to lure customers to their gas stations, thereby increasing their profit through volume sales. This doesn’t seem to ever happen, meaning that the same group of investors are controlling all gas and oil prices, preventing the free market from working properly.
What the hell? It has NOTHING to do with leaded gas. Leaded gas was a health disaster that resulted in a generation of stunted children. Please stick to the truth.
Masterskrain’s statement is correct, as with his experience with Sunoco, I had a friend who owned and entire oil company from wells to stations, and another friend’s dad worked for Chevron, preparing storage in the Philippines to make extra profit from the “Arab oil embargo”, that was totally orchestrated by U.S. companies.
Also as noted, we don’t HAVE a “gas shortage” at present as we’’re EXPORTING finished refined products, gasoline and others. We don’t have “new” refineries, because the laws have been written by the oil companies to allow them to upgrade the old, instead of having to meet stricter requirements for “new” ones. Production capacity is totally controlled to fix prices, period.
Good point. And while we’re pointing fingers, let’s not forget how ethanol costs more to produce than the cost of the gasoline it replaces and causes engine damage to boot. It benefits only the people who will vote in the Iowa caucuses.
I will state, as will any mechanic, or person following “agriculture” in America, that the ethanol requirement IS the stupidest thing the government has mandated! While “gasoline alley” at Indianapolis Motor Speedway has been pumping out ethanol for decades, the “Offy’s” ran on alcohol, not gasoline, street cars get worse fuel mileage, burn more gasoline, and seals are destroyed by alcohol. But ADM, Carghil, Monsanto, and the agricultural giants, supplying seed, and running corporate farms, love the waste of growing corn for ethanol.
Also, when lead was taken out of fuels, it was a “positive” in one respect, but the initial replacement the oil companies came up with was even more dangerous. There IS a “be careful what you wish for” issue when granting corporations higher profit margins.
BTW: Tesla Motors paid back their entire loan from the government for “alternate vehicle” stimulus today. Ford (who didn’t get “bailout” like Chrysler and GM) also got billions from the government for development, but hasn’t paid it back.

OUR rail system is a mess because those freight rail companies haven’t maintained lines, and have pulled out many, many miles of track they were given land grants to build and maintain, IN PERPETUITY, instead becoming oil companies selling off the much higher value from the mineral estate today. Most of our track and beds are in such bad shape the trains can’t begin to maintain the speeds they did in the ’50’s, when passenger rail WAS much more efficient. Of course that passenger trains have to sit on sidings and let those freight haulers pass by is another maneuver that doesn’t help us restore viable passenger service. It is we that have been taken back to the 1920’s if not the 1890’s. Check out how many more miles of rail we had in 1927 for a starter.

Washington State’s governor purportedly contacted the oil companies and offered them a choice. Quit gouging her constituents, or face an audit.
Gas prices in Washington have been nearly a dollar less than Oregon’s over the last year or so.
We need to clone her.
