    And the SS has done a well done job projecting a few Commanders in Chief (they did their best with Garfield, McKinnley and Kennedy).

    Wasn’t Garfield killed by the lack of medical sanitation at the time? Dr.s used to use threads from their frock coats as suture material. Although in Vietnam, I had to suture myself (lower thigh near knee) once since Doc (our corpsman) was busy with far more seriously wounded guys. Still, I dusted it after with the sulfur pack we all had, and doused it with Tabasco from C-Rations before I started sewing, because the NVA had a bad habit of dipping their bayonets in dukey. Hurt like Holy Hades for about three minutes then got numb – never got infected, either. Even germs don’t like Tabasco. Too bad Garfield didn’t have Tabasco available.

    “Looks like Ole Abe was a day late and a dollar short. He’d probably been trying to get it past Congress for months.”………………………………………………..My response was similar to yours;

    A day late and a life cut short.. Also. I’m sure you’re right that it was in committee for months – just as politics works today. I’ve always wondered how a human mind can work so slowly (and why we always seem to vote for them.)

    It was either on Jeopardy or Who Wants To Be a Millionaire this past week that Lincoln’s Secretary Of State was stabbed the same day Lincoln was shot. I didn’t ever hear about that.I’ll have to investigate further to see if he survived..Yes, I know Lincoln didn’t..

    As pointed out above, even if the creation of the Secret Service had happened months earlier, it would have had no effect on Lincoln’s assassination, because that was not what they were created to prevent. Makes an interesting sidenote to history, but it is still, in some ways, irrelevant.
