It was useful on Bamboo Harvester, the Palomino that portrayed Mr. Ed in the tv series: a strip of peanut butter under the upper lip got the horse flapping his lips to dislodge it, until the horse figured out they WANTED him to move his lips, then they could not get him to stop. So I have been told.
