We always called them “previews.” I never noticed when the common term changed to “trailer.” Of course the green label on the screen before the trailer calls it a preview. Now I’m doubly confused.

Movies used to run continuously. And there was more than just the feature, usually cartoons, news reels, short subjects and the feature the trailers. You went to the movie anytime and watched until it started to repeat. That is where the phrase “This is where we came in.” meaning time to leave came from.
