This is much too somber, but…

    April Come She Will

April come she will When streams are ripe and swelled with rain; May, she will stay, Resting in my arms again.

June, she’ll change her tune, In restless walks she’ll prowl the night; July, she will fly And give no warning to her flight.

August, die she must, The autumn winds blow chilly and cold; September I’ll remember A love once new has now grown old.

Nor, for that matter, can it be an imperative (but it would be fun to try!)

OK. The dictionary says it’s an auxiliary verb.

At first I thought, “Wait, Arlo, May isn’t a verb!” But then, what is it? Turns out it’s a “modal verb” – a verb modifier (but not an adverb). Modal verbs like may, could, would, shall, etc. don’t have infinitive forms, so there’s no “to may” and they can’t be inflected so there’s no past tense. But… it’s a verb.So here we have proof that a comic strip can (“modal verb”) improve our literacy..

In JR. High, we learned “may” is a “helping verb” : is, am, are, was, were, be, being, been, has, have, do, does, did, shall, will, should, would, may, might, must, can, could.

I had no idea there were so many versions of the mnemonic. The one I learned, and have heard many times from others, is:

30 days hath September,April, June, and November. All the rest have 31,Save February alone,Which hath but 28 days clear,And 29 in each Leap Year.

Does anyone remember the “movement” to equalize the calendar by takng all those extra days and creating a new month between July and August called Solarius? The rhyme then, courtesy of “B.C.” was:

    28 days hath September,

    April, June, and November,

    All the rest have 28,

    Except for Solarius

    that has four 7-day weeks.
