Concert tours are set up to pay for themselves. In addition, they are private enterprise, so if they fail to make money, the US taxpayer doesn’t have to foot the bill. Not so with the Blue Angels.
I suppose if the Blue Angels hadn’t been canceled during the sequester, Mr. Payne would have drawn a cartoon showing the Blue Angels at an air show while a government employee stood in the food stamp line. I wonder how he could spin it if Obama ran into a burning house to save kittens…
The Angels and Thunderbirds are extremely expensive recruiting tools. But not nearly as expensive as “defense contracting”, or “weapons systems” with cost plus R & D, that never work, like the F-35, F-22, B-1, B-2, and like the Stryker vehicles which are constantly costing more to be “modified”, because the design sucks.
“Same goes for Obama’s “green” stimulus packages—oh wait we taxpayers do foot that bill.”

Let me ask you some direct questions: do you see any value in getting out from under the thumb of our Middle Eastern “friends”? Can you see a value in finding energy sources that will allow us to tell the Arabs to go pack sand? Can you see that a Middle East that is not awash in oil wealth will have far less (negative) influence on how the rest of us operate?
I will agree that it would be ideal if all of our investments were money-makers. I submit that our oil subisidies cost us far more than what we lost from Solyndra. Solyndra happened once. Oil subsidies, evidently, are for life.
When mankind was trying to build an airplane, many designs were proven worthless. This does not mean that man would never be able to fly.
And before you tell me that there is all this oil available in the US, I’ll ask you why our policy has always been to use everyone else’s oil first.
And remind you that even the Bush administration, which you must agree was more willing to coddle oil companies than many, stated that even if we did the “Drill here, drill now” bit back when the saying was popular, stated that we wouldn’t make much of a dent in the world market, and that our investment would not pay us back until the year 2035. I’m willing to bet that solar and wind power will be much more affordable and efficient by that date, and that the days of burning petroleum and its attendant pollutants will thankfully just be a memory.

Therefore, I posit that if Obama did something undeniably good (rescuing kittens) Mr. Payne would still paint that deed in a negative light. The same would go for Matt Bors if Mitch McConnell were to do something like that. My personal opinion on the Air Shows is, since I live a mile from the former Brunswick Naval Airbase, this year my dog won’t be spending that week hiding under the bed as fighter jets constantly buzz our neighborhood.
