There are fundamental laws of magic. This is like in Harry Potter, when Harry and Ron ask Hermione why they’re starving in the woods. Why doesn’t she just create food out of thin air? Because there are certain things that cannot be made out of nothing, and food is one of them. So there are limits on what Dana can do, and making Rita smarter must be one.

Dana gets her powers as Office Manager. If she were CEO her powers would be lost.

I would argue that Dana is nice but frustrated. Carolina is nice but on her own planet. Rita thinks she’s nice she just happens to be clueless. This is a comic about the working world and its interactions — in most cases nice wouldn’t be funny or as relatable. Hence the reason most of the guys can be twits too. In fact two of the guys (Sal and Melvin) have no redeeming qualities at all. They are my Frank Burns / Neman characters, there so others can play off of their personalities quirks. The interesting thing in my mind at least is that why everybody in WD is flawed nobody is actually evil or a bad person. (Okay, accept maybe Melvin I really don’t like him.)

I don’t think anyone is powerful enough to turn Rita into a genius.

    One Rita is too much.

Right. we use Melvin less than Sal because he’s more one-dimensional. Rita can be clueless and exasperating in an almost innocent way. Melvin is not innocent.

The problem is magnitude. To raise an average IQ by 20 points is only a 20% increase. To someone with an IQ of 50, it is a 40% increase. Now think about what %increase it takes to work with nothing…
