A properly applied spanking, as part of an overall system of discipline, is not child abuse.

I like how he called it a “pat on the back”. I know that there were cases of “child abuse” in my day. But this whole mentality that a spanking/paddling is child abuse is ridiculous. When kids can threaten parents with arrest, it’s completely out of hand. And, I know. My sister’s youngest child tried it. Didn’t work on my sister. But it does on so many.

Like Charles Smith said, it depends on the child. Spankings never worked for me. They worked for my sister. restriction worked for me. Regardless, parents who aren’t parenting should be parenting. Friendship comes later.

I am 60 years old…..I was never spanked. I have never been a criminal or a malcontent in any way.On the other hand Hitler was spanked. With my kids it might have been easier/lazier just to swat, but more rewarding to find better ways. For instance one of my favorite ploys when they fought was the group hug…..followed by a discussion of family love.My 4 children have all become honest, law abiding citizens that care for others….imagine that.

If spanking is good for a child, I propose that corporations be allowed to use the same strategy on adults.

JOregon – I’m grateful you posted. I know lots of children who were spanked in my neighborhood. Spanking was used in my home. It did not make children more honest or law abiding. It made them sneakier and promoted the thinking that it was only wrong if you got caught.

A real pat on the back for an honest job well done would do so much more to reinforce good behavior but so few take the time to try that approach.
