Oldlegodad - I think you’re assigning way too much blame to the UAW. I’ve commented before - they didn’t decide to build honkin’ huge cars instead of hybrids years ago, the execs did.
I suspect Lego’s hatred of the unions has a bit to do with what I hate about the unions. At the Ford plant in St Paul one of our TV stations did a report about guys going out at lunch drinking and smoking pot and then going back to work. The unions made it impossible to fire those guys. I think they overdid it there and thus undermined they’re real purpose.
My “father-in-law” gripes about his union workers all the time. He gives them a task that he knows takes 1/2 hour, but by union rules he has to pay them for 2 hours. Thus undermining the unions true purpose.
HOWEVER, it is not entirely the UAW’s fault. Lack of forward thinking on the part of managament has cost the Big 3 much more.

motive… I suspect that a white collar OLD doesn’t want to get anything started, like accountability.

If either management or labor gets too much power, there is the very real potential for abuse: can we achieve a happy medium somehow?

Nice one dtriedel, absolute power corrupts absolutely

Clearly the evangelicals are out of power, Darwin is back!

The unions did some good things (outlawed child labor) but I agree that they go too far. They are not all bad, though.
