No, what she should have said was: “I can’t afford any MORE new clothes this year” because that’s what happens when a shopaholic like Cathy spends her money as fast and freely as she does. After all, she and Irving both bring in pretty good salaries (I’m assuming) and they don’t have any kids (of the 2-legged variety) to spend a huge amount of it on so why not? Except that her bank account is probably all tapped out by now from all the shopping she’s done so far this year and with Christmas up coming up just around the corner, she needs to be a little bit more careful with her money until then so that she’ll have it to spend on gifts for family, friends and co-workers instead when the time comes. At least that’s the way she SHOULD be looking at it anyhow. But knowing Cathy, I don’t think there’s anyway in the world she’ll be able to hold out that long without finding a “reason” of some kind as to why she simply has to buy a little something for herself FIRST as a special “treat,” “reward” or “pick-me-up” between now and then though! :-/
