Too many tragedies around the world, Syria isn’t the only one. The U.N. HAS done some good over the years, despite the screwups on occasion. “Peacekeeping” is a LOT tougher than war making. Errors can be made there as well. It’s kinda’ like invading a country that doesn’t actually have WMDs any more.

Iraq had poison gas which we sold/gave to them, supposedly to use against Iran during the Iran/Iraq war. I think it was during Ronnie Raygun’s administration. After the Gulf War, we let Iraq keep attack helicopters and much of the munitions we had given them earier. Sadam then used the poison gas to kill Kurds. Iraqis used much of the explosives that we had given them to later make improvised explosive devices (IEDs) used to kill and maim our soldiers after the U.S. invasion. This stuff has all been in the mainstream news over the years and should not be the least controversial unless you use faux news as your only source of information.

eepat: Most of the gas came from Germany. However, that is a minor detail. It all really came from those nongeographic nations called multinational corporations.

William Rivers Pitt and Scott Ritter wrote the book on Saddam’s LACK of WMDs as of 2002, verified by U.S. AND U.N. inspectors. Yes, he did have some prior to 91, and we destroyed them, one arsenal in particular was blown up, and poisoned a good many of our troops, many coming down with ALS, over 100 of them. The military said “not so”, but the statistics would have had only ONE case of ALS over their lifetimes, if not exposed.

The poison gases (several types, including VX, not just Sarin) were obtained through Germany, in a deal arranged by Rumsfeld. Saddam’s centrifuges for his “nuclear program” were similarly arranged. 60 minutes did a report, well-verified, on that quite some time ago. There are other sources as well.

Perhaps the worst thing about the U.N. is the permanent five on the Security Council, all “allies” at the end of WW II, who’ve spent the remaining years in pissing matches and wielding their veto authority, and the U.S. has frankly, been the worst, and also worst at paying our dues.

If the “council” didn’t spend so much time and effort tying the U.N.s hand behind its back, even more positive actions could have, and could be, taken.

Donald Rumsfeld and Brent Scowcroft were selling chemical agents for the Reagan administration during the Iran-Iraq war.
