I visited Wales (quite seriously Land of My Fathers, or at least grandfathers) once in the 80s. I used the bathroom in Tesco, a large supermarket chainstore. On the inside of the cubicle door, there was a large poster, “Now wash your hands.” The “now” cracked me up. I had visions of some idiot washing their hands in the bowl…
I can remember back when I was a kid and had learned to read, but still didn’t have a huge vocabulary. There was a sign like that in the restroom of the drive-in my dad managed.* The word Employees was much bigger than the other words and I thought employees was a disease you could catch if you didn’t wash.*How long ago that was and thus how old I am is demonstrated by the fact that we were very comfortably middle class. Try it with that job today.
When I was playing in a rock and roll band in the sixties at a very nice nightclub in DC, someone had crossed out hands on the sign in the men’s room and wrote in dixks. It was all rock and roll to me.
It’s interesting to note that a lot of restrooms have hot air dryers and no paper towels. Open the door and you contaminate your hands on the dirty handle that was touched by the people who don’t wash their hands.
Stephen Gilberg: Invented in the 1960s to refuse service to hippies despite the Public Accomodation Act. There is no health law in the country requiring it, despite the lies of the uninformed.
I once went into a restaurant that had a sign reading "No Shoes, No Shirt, No Service. I took a seat, and a guy wearing only a pair of shorts came over, dropped a menu in front of me and said, “Get it yourself”.
