This was a sad story . If he had not had a gun, would he have used a knife or baseball bat, or…..?Gun control is an important issue. Extended magazine clips, fully automatic weapons, AK 47s and other powerful military weapons have no place in civilian life. Sadly, the gun used by the football player was bought legally. I have no problem with guns, I do have problems with some gun owners, and while I own guns myself, they are stored in their cases with trigger locks. Guns don’t kill people, but they make it a lot easier for people who are upset to kill people. A better health care system with more mental health care for folks would save more lives than more gun control would, but that said…States like Virginia, my state of confusion, has many Gun Shows per year where guns can be bought, sold, and traded without the waiting period or background checks.Military grade weapons should be stringently regulated and no gun should be sold or traded without a background check, even if it is being sold by a private owner from a newspaper ad. The gun should be registered like a car and ownership likewise transferred.Guns make it easy to hurt many people quickly. I don’t want to ban guns, but I want it to be hard for the wrong people to have them.Respectfully,& Happy Holidayze,C.
Gross, disgusting and totally distorted view of reality. I’ve lived for 59 years without a gun. There really is not comparison between having a hand or both hands and having a gun.
I’m in favor of sensible gun control laws. (e.g. Living in NYC I don’t think we need vigilantes running around with “legal” concealed weapons everywhere.) I’ll leave it up to the skeptics to google how NYC’s crime rate regarding guns has changed (compared to say Chicago) and how that’s changed neighborhoods like Harlem, where I live..But I’m cool with responsible people owning guns. It shouldn’t be any easier than getting a drivers license, for example. And participation in a “well-regulated” militia shouldn’t make people frothingly angry anytime any attempt is made to track and control assault weapons..That being said, this cartoon is disingenuous and plays on a tired old cliche. In the wrong hands, guns are more deadly than most any weapon and the cultural pressure to be a bada$$ mofo with a gun increases likelihood of danger.
That’s in line with my experience, too. Individuals can sell their items to anyone, any time. No gun show needed. So why the focus on gun shows, I wonder?
He shot his girlfriend, then kissed her and said he was sorry. He kissed his baby, apologized to his mother, then went to the sports complex. He thanked two or 3 people for giving him a chance to play since he was undrafted. Then he shot himself. There was something wrong that I don’t think any law could have helped.
I think we can all agree, no matter what side of the debate we choose, that there are some people who should not have access to weapons. How to make that happen is the problem.
It’s impossible to strangle someone 100 yards away, but actually, most shooting homicides occur at separation distances under 10 feet! The mass shooting with large capacity weapons, DO occur at greater distances, typically.
BTW, forts and Navy ships have “magazines” to store ammunition. Whenever I see folks bring up “magazine” vs “clip” it shows to me that they’ve never been “around” much. IN the military, and law enforcement, we used the term “clip” whether for sidearms, or rifles, it’s just faster to say. Yes, I know the M-1 Garand with the little brass “clip” to hold the rounds as they were inserted into the rifle magazine is a special tool, but trying to sound “educated” with this NRA straw argument, is simply proof of a lack of experience in the real world.
@midaswelby & dltroutma,I really need to work on my proofreading. It was bad enough to have the wrong word there, but to have the wrong word beside the right one was unusually sloppy, and my writing makes english teachers weep, walk away muttering, or hit me.Thanks for the whack. It is of course, clip. Of course, when it’s death by strangulation, you’ll rarely see a murder/suicide.

Good luck to us all in the meantime.
