I work for the government. I am a nurse at a VA hospital emergency room. I wear a pedometer to work. I work the night shift. My pedometer says i covered 2.8 miles since midnight till 8 am. There are an awful lot of government workers who are workers in name only. There are also an awful lot of government workers who work their fannies off every day. The one period in my life where I was a fed, I was one of those who was up to his neck in alligators every day, working as one of a dwindling labor supply to turn out a quality product to an exacting specification every day. When I left work, leaving one colleague behind, she faced a conference table full of documents to edit every day. Needless to say, the workload was more than she alone could handle. The whole office went out on contract. I got a call from that contractor and accepted an invitation to a job interview. His first statement? “First off, we know that all government workers are lazy slobs; and we won’t tolerate that here.” “Just put your foot in your mouth all the way up to the knee joint, bud,” I thought, because I knew he knew I used to work that job, because I knew who recommended me to the contractor. His first words, he called me a lazy slob to my face. Then he told me what the job would not provide. Needless to say, I didn’t take them up on that position. And within six months the contractor lost the gig due to failure to perform. Gee, I wonder why that was.
Have you ever noticed that the people who talk about how stupid and lazy the government employees are, do not seem to be smart enough to get a government job?

Harumph! At least in the civil service, we know how to spell bureaucracy. And most of us work hard for our livings.
