Many present-day bakers would get stuck on the “oleo” ingredient, too.

A bigger problem is remembering what size those candy bars were at the time. Lots of size shrinkage, then the king-size bars come out (at a higher price) but eventually shrink down to the original size. What’s a Plugger to do?

Same with 5 & Dime stores. Last I saw one was late 70’s inE-town, PA.

This recipe sounded intriguing. I’m not one much for sweets, but I know those who are, so I looked up this recipe to see the rest of it. Holy cow! I thought 8 Milky Way bars sounded like a lot, but the recipe I found called for 11, plus 2 sticks of oleo. Albeit, 3 Milky Ways and 1 stick of oleo were for the frosting (along with 2 cups of powdered sugar). Good grief! Any desire for anything sweet I may have had curled up and died just reading the recipe!

Oops, we’re out of 5 cent candy bars, we’ll have to fill the car with 30 cents a gallon gasoline, and head to the Grand Union.

I remember when you could buy four gallons of gasoline for one dollar. This year it was the other way around.

The other day I considered myself a plugger when I couldn’t find the cent mark on the keyboard..I remember the gas, stamps, and candy bar. I remember 5 cent fudgesicle, and a 10 cent Brown Mule. They weren’t the tiny sticks they call popsicles today. They had real vanilla too.

Y’all need to remember, back then, we didn’t worry too much about sugar, and we definitely didnt have anything about cholesterol. Because ifen we had it, Ma would have fried it.
