Pretty sure butter and jam would cause them to slide off of the inside and outside of the roof (it also works for the roof of my mouth).
How does anyone know for sure it was the inside anyway? An explosion could have caused him to go through the roof and land on the outside. Maybe someone needs to go up on the roof regularly for routine maintenance. Who knows?
