I set a LITTLE fire as a child. I heard “Wait till your father gets home”.Sweat, shake, and shudder. My father made a stop at the firehouse on the way home. This made him latter.Sweat, shake and shudder. He gave me a fireman’s hat, a coloring book with a Dalmatian, and a plastic fireman’s badge. Never set another fire
Did I mention, both my folk were shrinks?
Here in NYC, firefighters and their equipment are worshiped in a much different way than they were before 9/11/2001. Nobody can imagine hundreds of rescuers, rushing 50-100 pounds of oxygen and equipment apiece into a lobby directly beneath two jetliner crashes and then up 90 flights of stairs, without putting such people in a somewhat different category from any other mortal human beings.
Kids didn’t even want to touch their fire engines, but just turn out by the hundreds to stare, until several years went by and a new generation of kids grew into the role.
The fact that a single fire truck, just sitting around anywhere, is kinda awesome in itself is a “reality check” for me. After all, it was always so - I’d just forgotten.

Well, maybe they can get on, but not actually go on a ride…

Even as a kid back in the mid-1960’s, I never rode on those things.

Often at events, kids are allowed to sit in the truck, but it usually stays in place. I love the enthusiasm though ;-)
@ David, I’ve noticed that at WaPo too ;-( I miss having the current strip -and the puppy arc is so good).
