Funny thing is, I can’t remember anyone ever being offended if I said “Merry Christmas” to them. But boy, do some conservative Christians get upset if I dare to say “Happy Holidays”!
Last I checked, Christmas was still a holiday, situated nicely among at least two others that are frequently celebrated in the US.
Me, I just wish the people who I know celebrate Christmas a merry one. And those who I’m not reasonably certain about, I offer them a wish that their holidays are happy. It’s all well and good when I can make that distinction.
Thing is, your local grocery store can’t be expected to make that same distinction. They have holiday advertising campaigns meant to appeal to as many people as possible, regardless of which holiday(s) they celebrate. So why be such a grouch and begrudge them their inclusive language?
