I was astonished, then appalled, at the last Presidential State of the Union Address. After every single sentence that Donald Trump spoke, Republicans applauded and sometimes stood in ovation. It was jarring and eerie to me, given that the speech was so cliche larded and self-serving. It should then have served as a view of the future.
It will be interesting, if not scary, to watch the next address. Will Trump appear in purple-trimmed robes? Carried in a litter by His most loyal Republican senators? Then crowned with a laurel wreath? Will his followers applaud and cheer, this time, after every single word? Will a “dues ex machina” appear from above the stage to rescue him from his political opponents?
That was extreme hyperbole, of course. But hasn’t the Trump presidency been of a non-stop hyperbolic nature? Self-proclaimed superlatives? Twisting truth and facts into endless Gordian knots?
When will these crass times be redeemed by dignity of souls? (Apology to poet Peter Vierek)
