We’ve got mostly hooded, Bullock’s, and orchard orioles in my neighborhood, and they do like sugary fruit treats. There were more orioles decades ago when The Valley of Heart’s Delight was mostly wild land and orchards.

I’ve been stocking up on Smuckers. In the next few weeks, there will come a time when the shelves are bare at the store.

You can track the movements of the orioles as they make their way north, online.

Web Search: Journey North UW-Madison Arboretum

Orioles and hummingbirds love sugar. You can have a feeder that accommodates both with sugar water, which is mixed at a ratio of 4:1, one cup of water for a quarter cup of sugar. These feeders have to be cleaned regularly. Some oriole feeders have cups for jelly. With those, you can just remove the cup and replace it with a cleaned and filled cup. Much more convenient. Park Seed has a nice Major Wheeler honeysuckle that seems to be doing well here so far, in spite of harsh weather. That will attract the hummingbirds.

Last time I saw Orioles was in Utah in around 1983. Two beautiful ones, with red and yellow coloring, cavorting in an Austrian copper Rose Bush behind my house. I wish I had had a camera available at the time, they are so beautiful.

The Baltimore Oriole is one of my favourite birds from when I was growing up in the suburbs of New York City. Now that I live in Germany I get to enjoy the Eichelhäher (Garrulus glandarius) on the rare occasions when it shows up in my garden.

We feed Rufous and Anna’s hummingbirds here

    willingly

while our new, tender plants are munched by deer

    willy-nilly.

The lush orange and green flashes of throats

    glitteringly

help rid us of primal urges to build deer moats

    sweatingly.

Only… imagine having such a high metabolism

    - unwillingly? -

Boldly… one must hibernate, without miss, every o’night

    - unfailingly! -

    to survive ’til next morning,

for another go at more sipping

    from red-hued feeders and flowers,

the water-sugars of more living hours.

    — from “Lipsticked Pigs Can’t Fly but Feathered Bears Do,” in the upcoming “Nominally Nature Notes” series on Maypo cereal boxes and ten-pound bags of Boy Howdy! cane sugar

Is grape jelly a magical elixir, or will any jelly do? What about raspberry jelly or marmalade? I, myself, am partial to apricot jelly, but I have yet to learn how to fly; outside of metaphorically.

    Re: Blog

The dog smell/time video is fascinating to me. I’ve known for some time that a dogs sense of smell is their primary sensory input, and they use it to map/navigate/ make sense of their world, and this is a wonderful new wrinkle to learn about.

It’s a fascinating area of study and makes me wonder what other modes of perception we have yet to uncover, and that could lead to technological breakthroughs.

Now here is something that I found interesting. My oriole feeder is like a rectangular box, open on the two long sides, with a curved top and a bottom that has two places for jelly cups. I place it so that the open sides are facing east and west. Once upon a time, I repositioned it, so that the open sides faced north and south. The orioles had trouble landing when I did that, being used to the east-west sides being open. I put it pack the other way, and they went back to their usual adept aerobatics.
