    I take OFFENCE at the idea that only a ‘CONVENTIONAL’ couple should be sent on this voyage. What about a ‘married’ gay or lesbian couple ?? Just wondering ………..

    I believe 16 month is the total mission time. Each trip will take about 5 month, then there will be 6 month of exploring in between. But however you look at it, life support is going to be a big issue, as are micro-meteorites, radiation, sickness, accidents and so on. Whoever does this will be remembered forever, like Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. Our technology is better these days, but the challenge to go to Mars is (relatively speaking) much bigger than the Apollo-challenge..

    I have seen men and women wearing their hair long with lipstick… and I know men and women who wear their hair short with no lipstick…. seems to me that you have a predisposition to (or prejudice against) conventional stereotypes.
