    Actually, knowing where the solid dirt is, as opposed to the diggable topsoil, would have been really useful when I was creating a new garden from the ground surrounding our newly-built house.

    New houses are usually built on rubble from the rest of the houses in the street. Ours was.

    Those are great for installing fence posts. My post hole digger had a rock detector. There was a giant rock in every post hole I dug.
