Not only that, but the global flood only really affected the sea coasts where nearly everybody lived, and was caused by severe and sudden glacial recession.

Don’t forget the “seven of clean animals” along with the “two of unclean animals.”

Why does nearly every depiction of Noah’s Ark show giraffes when it is now known that giraffes as we know them did not exist in Biblical times?

No. This would need to be longer ago. Estimate of Biblical times put the Creation some six or seven thousand years ago. Allowing a bit of error, this could have the world destroyed and remade, with the flooding happening some seven to nine thousand years ago, with seas rising as much as two feet a year at some points in a thaw cycle that continues today, but would have been very severe for about four to six hundred years, with a total sea rise of some six hundred feet. You can imagine how that would mess things up in a post-apocalyptic world created by global wars and ignorance of inevitable climate cycles. If you can’t imagine, sit tight for ten or twelve thousand years and try to stay awake for it this time.

Actually, the Santorini explanation is just one of the theories I’ve read about. The bible has been written over many years and the original work has been long forgotten. The idea for a single god stems from Akhenaten’s reorganisation of the Egyptian religion.

One idea for a singular god, or primal source, at any rate. I would theorize that a god is not what it seems to people reading without the keys to comprehension, so that magnetic force would be a god, as would valence bonding or the hydrologic cycle, scientific realities encoded in legend for those with the knowledge to extract them.
