I read somewhere that Vic was actually (in her youth, at least) a pretty fun gal. It was Albert that was the prude and who set the tone for the “Victoria Era”.

…i heard it was her mourning period after losing her dear Albert that pretty much set the tone for the Victorian Era…

Prince Albert’s death mattered, but things were already swinging that way. The American Revolution, the beginnings of modern science, the French Revolution, Napoleon, the Industrial Revolution, the beginnings of the Labor Movement—there was a large part of Britain screaming: “Stop! Stop! Stop! Put everything back the way it was!”.

The Victorian ethic was very much restricted to the upper classes. That ethic being: you can do it but you mustn’t talk about it or be able to see it.

She was upset to see a man in his underwear, so he removed it. Now she’s happy.
