No ice? You will want to move that ark somewhere else, what with all the transpolar sea traffic that would follow.
Maybe Christmas Island (Kirimati, not the one with the red crabs). You might set up camp near the old nuclear bomb test areas. Bet you could be alone there…

As for the ice prediction, it may be a little soon for that to be true. Climate data shows that the minimum extent of sea ice declined by 62% between 1980 and 2010.

The site says 12% decline per decade, but the rate has been increasing. Between 2000 and 2010, the minimum ice declined by 22%. Assuming 25% for 2005-2015, there would still be about 50% of the coverage in 1980.

However, minimum area coverage is only part of the story. The amount of old ice is decreasing rapidly. This means that the coverage is thinner every year. See here.

The upshot is that the total amount of ice is going to keep decreasing. There will still be some arctic ice but it will be seasonal.

Unless they live at the magnetic North Pole. It’s very close to an island off the north coast of Canada.

Are these the same people who said that the Arctic would be ice free by 2013, or someone else?

No one said that, of course. It may have been a future prediction of their model, but if they were scientists, they always evaluate the uncertainty. But there is no question that the ice is vanishing, the earth is warming, and the oceans are rising and acidifying: that’s observed fact, and matches the models as well as expected.

I can’t read what it says in the last panel and the magnifier doesn’t work.

Given that he needs a runway for the sleigh, he should consider a carrier rather than a traditional ark; I understand the ex-USS Enterprise (CVN-65) is available.

Or an Ark B, with the elves who sanitize phones and sell insurance.

Or just jump to the next step and build an orbital platform…

All Santa needs to do is build a much bigger sleigh and breed more reindeer.
