It’s amusing how the statue of Cromwell at the Palace of Westminster in London seems to be placed a little bit out of the way. Sure, he is commemorated … but it requires some effort to find him. He’s never been the most popular historical British figure with all the people.

“The most interesting thing about King Charles the First is that he was five foot six inches tall at the start of his reign, but only four foot eight inches tall at the end of it”

If it wasn’t for Cromwell, America might never have fought for independence

Whatever Cromwell did it was pretty minor compared to what the Catholic Church was doing to the Jews in Spain. But I notice Holy Mother Church is “cute and cuddly” and Cromwell is Satan. Guess which entity has billions of dollars to spend on PR.

Cromwell could never handle publishing a webcomic. He’d lop the header off of every page!

Not really seeing the connection here, since the Jews were expelled from Spain a century and a half before Cromwell’s reign and two centuries after they were expelled from England by Edward I.

Also, Cromwell’s intentions in inviting Jewish merchants back were ambiguous and mercenary, to put it kindly. Either way, trying to excuse Cromwell (who did his fair share of unabashed persecuting and massacre in his day) by saying that some Catholics have been naughtier over the course of two millennia seems a bit…dodgy. Why not then point out that one of Cromwell’s predecessors, Edward, beat Ferdinand and Isabella to the expulsion punch by 202 years and blame ol’ Ollie, too? I mean, if some Catholics happening to be antisemitic in history means all Catholics have been antisemites, it follows by the same logic that Cromwell, being a ruler of England, must have been a virulent antisemite just like his predecessor Edward I.
