    Yes it is 38 but would it not the Romans think it would be easier to just write 38 instead of XXXVIII,not very smart those Romans.

    True, the Arabic system is way more efficient. Not only because it’s easier to write, but the Arabs came up with the idea of using the digit 0 to represent zero, which makes simple arithmetic so much easier.
    Don’t believe me? Then try multiplying XXXVIII by X without converting them to Arabic numerals first.
