Jan Eliot's funny and irreverent Stone Soup follows the saga of an extended, blended family, starring two working-mom sisters living just across the fence from each other. Val and Joan share life with their opinionated mother, a middle-school diva and 10-year-old tomboy, a reclusive teenage boy, a wild preschooler and his new baby sister...and of course Wally, the ultimate nice guy who steps into his stepdad shoes with grace amid the chaos. Working-parent hassles, pre-school tantrums, middle-school angst, love and the single mom... it's all here in Stone Soup.

About the time you have grandkids.

That’s why you are supposed to have kids in your thirties and not in your forties.

I wouldn’t take anything in the world for mine, but I wouldn’t give a plugged nickle for another pregnancy at this time.

Where does that baby get her red hair?

Have them early…while you still have some energy.

“Where does that baby get her red hair?”
Recessive gene. Same place her Aunt Val (Joan’s sister) got her red hair. (Of course, Wally prob. has a recessive red-hair or blond gene, too, for this to happen.)

You take what life gives you. Kids early, or kids late……..
……. or not at all.

. . . and you might have to rear (or help rear) grandkids or great-grandkids. It happens. (See “Grand Avenue.”)

Being the first child of older parents, I wanted to have ours earlier. My 2 cents – at least have your first before you are 20. Now that I am a grandparent, I see how this works in spades – we get the grandchildren on a regular basis, I couldn’t imagine watching babies in another 10-15 years.

Reminds me of the time I almost dozed off during an English class when I had a cold; the teacher nudged me and I was SO embarrassed that I wanted to sink into the floor.
