The Republicans have balked at any – ANY – tax increase including allowing a tax break to elapse. They have said over and over, no tax increase of any sort (unless it only affects the poor). The only thing they’ll accept is cuts – but only cuts to their least favorite items.

Mainly because Palestinians are alike the Kurd in that they were mostly an ethnic minority that occupied a series of provinces.

“And why was there no Palestine BEFORE there was an Isreal back in the early 20th century? Surely with Egypt owning that land they could have carved out a piece for the PLO then?”

you should listen to your mama. there isn’t a correct fact in your entire post, but i’ll just deal with the one above that hasn’t been dealt with yet. A chunk of land WAS set aside for the palestinians. It was and still is called “JORDAN” (or transjordan as it were).

but the israeli-palestinian conflict is NOT about land.

egads! facts: when the Ottoman Empire lost in WW1, the land was divided into 2 Mandates, the British Mandate gave the vast majority of the Land that the earlier Balfour Declaration had promised to the Jews….to Arabs to create what is today Jordan…about 80% of the Jews’ Land.
the UN took over the League of Nations rule and offered a divided land to 2 states, one for Jews and one for Arabs in 1947. The Arabs rejected the offer and threatened war and when Israel formally became a recognized State in May of 1948 a group of Arab states started the first war to “wipe out the Jews”……when Israel won each of these wars FOR THE LAND, and wanted the peace deal with Egypt, Israel gave the entire Sinai region complete with costly developments, to Egypt. In 2005 to try to gain “peace” with killers, Israel forced the Jews who lived in Gaza to surrendur all their properties.
The Gazans thanked Israel by immediate rocket attacks, and destroyed greenhouses and other Jewish business buildings, that could have sustained many Arabs as they had sustained Jews with income for investments and labor.
Arabs do not truly want “peace” with Jews. Proven constantly, read the actual history.

The Palestinians could have had a “2-state solution” back in 1948. The problem is that no matter how many wars they loose, their desire is still the same…..“Kill the Jews and take it all”
