“Unless you’re one of the 80 million who took the trouble to provide for yourself but now has lost or will lose your health care altogether as a result of the individual or employer mandates. If you are, you’re probably facing death from cancer or other high-cost diseases. The low-information liberals consider you to be a bump in the road, and they don’t mind saying so on these pages.”

The claim of 80 million losing coverage, is almost certainly inflated. It is a prediction, not the current reality. There is a real problem with finding the right balance between acceptable coverage & costs. Obama has already delayed the provisions that would cause people to lose their plans. I expect conservatives will wait until after next year’s elections to start looking at how they want to address the issue.

People who have serious diseases like cancer are clear winners under the ACA. Up till recently, unless you were already in a pretty decent insurance plan, you were looking at caps, cancellations, bankruptcy and so on.

Pick up enough seats next year, & conservatives will be well positioned to curb features of the ACA they dislike. Personally, I’d be more willing to trust conservatives if they had used honest arguments & made honest efforts at improving the ACA. Instead we got low information diatribes about death panels & socialism, coupled with time wasting repeal efforts.

“Note to Kathleen Sebelius: “A cougar does not change its spots””

Yeah… nothing misogynist about that remark. Keep courting those women voters. /sarcasm

@Harleyquinn – 5 million or 80 million makes no difference if you’re one of them…

Plans are being “cancelled” by the insurance companies because they do not want to grandfather those plans. In other cases, the “cancellations” are that they are being moved to other plans, state exchanges, or are presented with various options for continuation. Even before the ACA, private insurers have changed plan offerings and rates, with a required notification (typically 90 days). What we’re seeing now is it all being done at the same time, as the market rules have changed (such as the mandate that carriers cover at least 60% of healthcare costs) to get rid of “junk” insurance policies – those that have little or no value, and are designed to scam consumers.
And the usual conservatives are screaming and ranting non-stop, of course, and offer zero useful suggestions. A single-payer option would have been the best way to go, but hey, that’s socialism, so we’re stuck with trying to get private insurers to provide affordable health care to all.
Regardless, let’s see, googled “number of persons losing coverage under obamacare” and came up with…
    52 million ( – conservative site)
    23-41 million ( – conservative site)
7-14 million (1 mill in CA, CaliforniaHealthline – neutral site)
    80 million ( – duh?)
Not possible to tell ( – neutral)
    57 million ( – conservative)
More than 2 million, most of which will have better policies ( – neutral)
4.5 mill now but more than 100 mill later ( – uber conservative)
300k FL residents lose insurance (PolitiFact – rated “mostly false”)
    16 mill ( – conservative)
    100 mill ( – ultra conservative)
    7 to 12 mill (
    Approx 5-6 mill ( – conservative)
1.5 mill, and less than 1% will pay more in insurance premiums ( – neutral)
    8-9 mill ? ( – conservative)
    15 mill ( – liberal)
    129 mill ( – conservative)
…and there are many others. Point is, the law is new and better than what we had before, regardless of the screaming rants being posted by the usual conservatives.

And by the way, our uber-conservative San Diego rag, The Union Tribune in today’s Sunday edition printed a multi-page special on Steve Breen’s political cartoons over the years. Breen measures on the right side of the conservative meter, but nowhere near the likes of Payne or Ramirez.
