    No matter what your stand on gun laws, this editorial illustration is appropriate, civil, and respectful.
    No one condones gun violence.
    ^
    On an ironic note, after doing a five minute segment on the shooting, including conversations with people who talked about the shooter playing online first person shooter games on a large screen tv, the newscaster said the following -
    “And on a lighter note, gamers are excited about the release of Grand Theft Auto V.”
    Yeah….
    right.
    disgustedly,

    @Genome Project

    Hey Genome Project…..If you actually understood the law, and did a little research yourself, you might come to find out that it has been illegal since 1934 – that is 79 years ago – to own an “automatic weapon.” Semi-automatic is a weapons design dating back to before the Civil War.

    Banning weapons does two things…..1) it ignores the common theme running through many of these mass shootings: Mental Health 2) it takes away the rights of millions of people that have not broken the law. You punish an entire society for the fell good, knee jerk reaction to a handful of people.

    You are more likely to die in a car accident than by a firearm. You are more likely to be struck by lightning, bitten by a shark, die in a plane crash, or any myriad of other situations than you are to die from some mentally unstable (common theme here?) squeezing a trigger.

    Are we to ban cars? Planes? Thunderstroms? Kill all the sharks and bears?

    This is one time that I TOTALLY agree with you!
    -
    We cannot keep publishing violence on TV, in the movies, on the internet, and in games without the ‘chickens coming home to roost’. What really gets me is the ‘fake’ horror shown by the news people when they are the ones supporting the horrible products of Hollywood, et al.

    I find your comparison to 9-11 and gun control enlightening about the attitude of ignorance.
    Laws were indeed passed and no planes have been run into buildings since. They came up with laws that worked because it was demanded.
    Gun control is the same, when it is DEMANDED it will be done.

    Steve: thanks for a respectful ’toon.

    Automatic weapons are NOT “illegal”, they just require a tax and license. My nephew owns TWO fully automatic weapons!!

    What the hell do you expect!? We haven’t done ANYthing to stop this kind of violence. Of course it’s going to happen again and again and again…

    @Genome Project

    You do realize that automatic weapons are already strictly regulated. At a congressional hearing it was admitted that a registered automatic weapon has only been used in ONE crime since 1934. That was when a policeman found his wife in bed with another man, returned to his patrol vehicle and used his automatic rifle to kill him. Every other legally owned automatic weapon has NOT been used in a crime for about 80 years.

    It would make more sense to compare the race of the people committing the most gun crimes and then call for the banning of possession weapons to them. But THAT would be considered racist, and rightly so. You do not remove the rights of a group of people for the actions of a minority of that people. By the same token you should not remove the rights of all the people in the US for the actions of the mentally ill.

    If you want to end the actions of mentally ill people killing dozens and wounding multiple tens more, then let people have the ability to shoot back. The shooting will end with far fewer people dead, and in far less time than it will take for the police to arrive.

    @CDK

    Perspective, like calling A-10s firearms, I stand by my comment.
    And if gun control was demanded by the people a little thought put into it would cause realization.
    This would take more than half the population demanding it, and those would be giving up their guns to make the demand.
    Just because it is impossible for that scenario to ever come up does not mean it would not be functional.
    But then, 50 years ago who ever thought cigarettes would decline?
    Education of the next generation could work magic, but would require that demand for policy change which does not and will not exist.
