I’m old enough to remember Sen. Henry “Scoop” Jackson’s “Golden Fleece Awards”, which were given to the biggest wastes of taxpayer money.
He’s not with us anymore, but we still have the General Accounting Office and other oversight committees which discover and make public the amount of waste of public dollars, albeit with less humor.
And we do now what we did then: shake our heads, ball our fingers into a fist, and DO NOTHING about it.
We may not know every instance of waste and fraud, but we have the opportunity to know about most of it. Congress has the opportunity and the power, (and the time, since they don’t do anything now) to do something about it. Yet they do not. And we continue to elect them to do nothing.
We can blame Congress all we want, and they deserve every ounce of our scorn. But if we want to truly do something about it, we have to look in the mirror.
