Wonder if John Banner got a laugh out of lampooning the national socialists. He was part of a jewish family that escaped.
My favorite Schultz routine was when he, Hogan, and Klink were talking about what they’d do after the war.
Schultz: “I will make toys. I worked at (can’t remember the name)”
Klink: Hogan, the (??) company was the largest manufacturer of toys in Germany. (To schultz) What makes you think they will give you your job back?"
Schultz: I don’t see why not. I own it.

…Not only has the Shoe strip been reduced to bad puns most of the time, it refers to ancient stuff like a 1960’s TV show that young people today won’t even ‘get’ until they look it up on Wikipedia or YouTube – and then the humor is lost. I REALLY miss the original MacNelly…

John Banner and Werner Klemperer (sp?) – Col. Klink – were both Jewish, and neither one would take the role unless they were guaranteed by the show’s creators that the Nazis in the show would always look like fools.

Sounds painfully like our current president – “I wasn’t involved.” “I wasn’t informed on this.” “Someone else did it.”

    Sound familiar?

    … sigh …
