This is absolutely ridiculous. My father, a refugee from war-torn Europe, never got past grade 3 and worked as a short-order cook, barely literate. But he loved opera, because he could understand the language. He called “highbrows” “longhairs,” but he loved opera!

The Metropolitan Opera broadcasts live about ten times a year to movie theaters around the world. I strongly recommend to anyone reading this that they check it out. Info at metopera.org.

I remember my dad telling me he used to listen to the Met Opera broadcasts on Saturdays as a kid, which really surprised my because he was otherwise blue-collar all the way. I don’t share the love, though. I enjoy classical music, but when the fat lady starts singing…

    I bought him a conductor’s baton for his birthday….little did I know ….

Agreed. I particularly love the way Elmer’s tune changes from the upbeat, “I’m gonna kill a waabbit, gonna kill a waabbit, gonna kill a waaabbiiiit,” in the opening scene to the woeful, “I killed a waabbit, killed a waabbit, killed a waaaabbiiit,” in the closing scene.

To those who complain about not understanding the words, subtitles are included in the theater broadcasts.
