I noted at least several of the fatalities were NOT wearing seat belts, and airbags are NOT a substitute for, but a supplement to seat belts, which are mandatory. Looks like the damage comes from an internal cover plate of some sort that doesn’t properly disintegrate? BTW, the airbags HAVE caused burns, to serious burns, on everyone I know who’ve had them deploy!
I’m all for mandatory seat belts, having been around racing for decades, but I see air bags as a serious safety detriment more often than “benefit”. Folks not using their belts, and dying because of it, is a large part of that.
