swr: just a note: recording cell phone use, and even texting, has only recently been noted in accident reports. Now that information IS being gathered, and combined with a number of studies and “field tests”, you’re MUCH more likely to be killed by a texting driver than a drunk, and merely “more” likely to be killed by a driver on a hand held phone, and only mildly more likely to face danger from “hands free”. The drastic difference between phone use, and passengers is that passengers can see where they’re at, and judge their distraction.
Which, btw, had a “stupidrvisor” constantly complaining about my speed (not speeding, just a mountain road, and I raced in SCCA for 11 years, and helped teach pursuit driving so felt quite comfortable on other than a straight line freeway) yet on the way back he insisted on driving, turned to talk to a passenger in the rear seat, and despite my screaming at him, for some time!, only at the last moment did the pull back onto the right side of the road and avoid a head-on collision with a semi truck! So, I DO take your point about “passenger conversations” with a view toward how stupid some folks indeed ARE when ignoring their DRIVING!
