The Article is correct. The Chicago political machine is a giant vacuum sucking up all the money from downstate and pouring it into socialist programs. How do you think Obama got so rich doing community organizing?

Maybe you should go back and see if anything usful is actually taught any more.Go to a college graduation ceremony and ask the grads questions from an eighth grade history test from the 50’ or 60’s.See if they can answer any of the questions. The left wants high paid union jobs and benefits without having to do much of anything and turning out functional illiterates.

    @Overtaxed

According to socialism, Chicago is supposed to be Utopia because all elements of the anti-socialists have been eliminated.

Obama’s ultra-socialist buddy, Rahm Emanuel has been steadily closing traditional schools in favor of private charter schools.

    Education is not a right.

Can’t get any more un-American than that. I try to avoid name calling, but that is one of the more selfish, stupid and short sighted comments I’ve seen. One of the central principles this nation was founded on was free, universal public education.

“The tax which will be paid for the purpose of education is not more than the thousandth part of what will be paid to kings, priests and nobles who will rise up among us if we leave the people in ignorance.” – Thomas Jefferson

“Laws for the liberal education of the youth, especially of the lower class of the people, are so extremely wise and useful, that, to a humane and generous mind, no expense for this purpose would be thought extravagant.” – John Adams

“The good Education of Youth has been esteemed by wise Men in all Ages, as the surest Foundation of the Happiness both of private Families and of Common-wealths. Almost all Governments have therefore made it a principal Object of their Attention, to establish and endow with proper Revenues, such Seminaries of Learning, as might supply the succeeding Age with Men qualified to serve the Publick with Honour to themselves, and to their Country.” – Ben Franklin

“The best means of forming a manly, virtuous, and happy people will be found in the right education of youth. Without this foundation, every other means, in my opinion, must fail.” – George Washington

“A nation under a well regulated government, should permit none to remain uninstructed. It is monarchical and aristocratical government only that requires ignorance for its support.” -Thomas Paine

“Knowledge will forever govern ignorance: And a people who mean to be their own Governors, must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives.” -James Madison

“Every time you stop a school, you will have to build a jail. What you gain at one end you lose at the other. It’s like feeding a dog on his own tail. It won’t fatten the dog.” – Mark Twain

    Mephistopholes is correct.
The Democrat Liberals have been in control of Illinois for decades, and the Chicago public schools have a large number of “grads” that were not even taught that Springfield, “in the South”, is the state capitol.
    -
The Pension system is a fiscal scandal.
The Unions and the Democrats, or do I repeat myself, have driven this state into the same DEBT PIT with California and New York.
    -
Of course Chicago thugs take what they want off the top of the public state treasury. And the Chicago thugs in the White House are doing the same rip-off of taxpayers in the 50 states.

First off, Chicago is a machine alright. It’s the machine that pumps money to the rest of the State of Illinois. Most of those folks couldn’t care less about the City, but they know they would be strapped for cash without money from Chicago & the ‘burbs. It’s very telling that the opposition to Chicago’s funding comes from a suburban Republican, not from downstate. Her district still spends a little more per student than Chicago.

I’ll be the first to admit that Illinois school funding needs work. Some districts are strapped for cash, while others spend twice what Chicago spends. Should public schools in wealthy areas get more than poor areas? That is what’s happening. If this legislator had a clue, she’d go after the root of the problem.

And while I would real standard for all schools I am not so foolish as to believe one size fits all students. because it has worked so well in communist countries.

Would you be ashamed if a guy who went to Chicago Public Schools made fun of your poor grammar & punctuation?

“One size fits all”, certainly is not a good approach. Some kids come from homes where they are supported & prepared. Some do not. We should try to educate them all, IMO. I’m not an expert in curriculum, but I’d guess that a system that spends more on districts with well prepared & supported kids, than on districts with unprepared, unsupported kids, would yield results similar to what we are seeing.

Because that is the system we have.
