“It won’t work, and you can’t fire it” was the punchline of a military joke back in the ‘50s — describing the Bomarc, an early air defense weapon, as a “civil service missile”. (It was eventually dropped as being too expensive and ineffective.) . Actually, the joke wasn’t particularly fair to either the Bomarc, or civil service employees (speaking as one myself!)….|
The only thing the Bomarc did was to stop Canada from building the Avro Arrow, leaving Norad behind the Soviets for almost a decade. We must promote our multinattional corporations over Canadian multinational corporations and if Diefenbaker agrees, so much the easier. Thus your research project for today.
