Of course, the Bible forbids swearing oaths in God’s name.

I wonder what the alternative phrase is for the last part?

But so many in-your-face Christians demand it in their govt and civic organizations.

That’s why you can say “affirm” instead.

I’ve noticed that members of Congress, state legislators, or city bigwigs never take an oath before hearings. I think I know the reason, but it’s a cynical one.

    - Nothing. That last part is just tacked on.

    - Gotta love irony!

“Of course, the Bible forbids swearing oaths in God’s name.”

And there’s a danger in assuming something from one verse of the Bible.

For when God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself" (Heb. 6:13). Hmm. If I intend to keep my oath, maybe it’s not wrong to make it in God’s name.

I don’t expect a big discussion about this here. I’m just encouraging you to check out all of the verses about oaths (or anything else), and not just take someone’s opinion, including mine, as gospel. Contrary to some opinions, God never says to check your brain at the door, and sometimes He says, “Test me.”

From the best I can tell…a number of those same politicians who are most ready to ascribe to god are the ones who are quickest to deny that very word whether it be in their hatred of and contempt for those less successful, demand that all follow a narrow and often false version of faith or willingly lie and deceive. But they all are ready to claim ‘…so help me god.’ So, I would ask the cartoonist to describe ‘who is this god’ that those hypocrites claim to follow even as they call His name?

There are several sects, amish come to mind and i believe quakers who will not swear an oath nor pledge alligance. if they are call to testify in a legal matter they do use affirm but i forget the exact wording used, its been several years since i’ve had much contact.

No hate, just the truth. But when you attack you call it hate. Misnomer like today. No hate at all just the truth. Are you free yet?
