    …and the treads painted red and blue if it’s a tractor tire.

    @dirtpharmer

    Never seen the red/blue tread-painting on any of the minigardens in my neighborhood, although we had the wire-spool/picnic table in the area: it could seat six comfortably. Also had a carved-out tractor tire as a backyard swing. Man, that was one comfy and formfitting ride for a lazy weekend.

    Okay, I’m sure there must be something racist in there somewhere, but I can’t figure out what it is yet.

    “These white-wall tires, they say look at me, here I am, love me.”

    RobinHood2013: Not so much racist as socioeconomic (and who gets emotional over that?): “po’whitetrash” is the old term. Back when I was putting a good pack mule out of work carrying the mail, I noticed the main difference between old white (northern European ancestry) and new white (after 1940 Hispanic) was that while the socioeconomic level was the same, the old stank and the yard was full of junk, while the new was full of heat-resistant flowers (hollyhocks, xenias, etc.).

    Interesting! I always wanted that job since I had so much experience delivering newspapers.

    Ahh all that benzene dribbling down into the well. Good for the health.

    comicsssfan: I delivered papers while in college. The Post office was survival in the early blacklist days. Both were essentially manual labor, but having sociology as part of my interdisciplinary major made the latter actually enjoyable because it permitted interaction with the customers.

    There’s a house here in town with white-painted tractor tires for planters. … I thought they were the only family who did that. :P

    Ah, I suspected a college degree would have helped me to get that job. Although nothing is guaranteed.
