    Come again? What does “rest on your laurels” mean? (Side note: I’ve a cousin named Laurel.)

    @TEMPLO S.U.D.

    It basically means to sit back and take it easy. Not sure where it came from.

    Actually, Rat, his name’s Stephen, not Shirley.

    @MPeters

    More accurately, it means to coast along by putting in minimal effort based upon past successes. The expression comes from the fact that laurel wreaths were awarded anciently to athletes in competitions (the original Olympic Games in Greece come to mind). I’m surprised that templo SUD has never heard the saying — it’s been around for decades.

    A wreath of laurel was placed on the head of the winner in a war or athletic contest in ancient times. Resting on your laurels means you haven’t been trying to accomplish anything new lately.
