No- actually the majority of the people want something done to help cure the problem which is NOT the guns it is the group of insane and criminals that have come to possess them. The government shall NOT disarm its people.

Probably “the 800-lb. gorilla” in the room,
that everybody tries hard to pretend isn’t there.
A rhyme that represents this same idea:
“As I was walking up the stair,
    I met a man that wasn’t there.
    He wasn’t there again today.
    I wish, I wish he’d go away!”
Aside from the topic, this is beautifully drawn editorial art. How long do you figure it takes Oliphant to finish his pieces?

Republicans are anti-gun control and anti-mental health. So if you are mentally ill, the Republican response is to give you a gun so you shoot someone (preferably yourself, but they don’t really care as long as it isn’t them.

It depends on your definition of sensible gun control. I’m willing to go as far as extended background checks and stronger prosecution of straw purchases. But straw purchases are hard to prosecute in the less than obvious cases. This is my threshold of “sensible”. What is sensible to me is insanity to others. The majority want the same goal: stop gun violence. Then realize it is impossible to stop gun violence, so go for the next best thing which is reduce gun violence. The solution to this bifurcates between logic and emotion.

Twenty years ago I was on a ferry going to Canada to vacation. I stood at the bow, warm sunlight bathing me face, watching the seagulls wheel and cry, just a joyous, joyous moment.
The Canadian couple standing next to me (total strangers) turned to me and said: “So, what’s all this aboot the right to bear arms, eh?”
Momentarily taken aback, I finally managed to respond: “Really? No ‘Good morning’ or ‘Nice day’ or even a ‘Hello’ — just launch right into it with someone you’ve never met before? First words out of your mouth? Really?” I stalked away, hopefully leaving them embarrassed, but I doubt it.
It ruined my entire day. Twenty years later I still remember it. This is how the rest of the world sees America.
    Not the opportunity.
    Not the freedom.
    Just guns.
    Guns, guns, guns.

I can’t believe I didn’t pick up on that. Must have been a moment of cranial flatulence.

@ Rickapolis-No I think that the title of “the biggest embarrassment in America” is soully owned by the Obama Administration. I Am The NRA, and darn proud of it.

Dear Comrade ahab: The gun idustry is killing no one. The mmore guns ther are in America, the lower our muder numbers and murde rates get. Currently they’re both at over 40 year lows.
