    As a variation on this theme: every couple weeks during the summer, the town I live in holds a street festival of one sort or another in the downtown. When they block off the street for the festival, they use big metal barricades… which they put right on top of the metal-detecting coils that control the stoplights. And the lights respond by giving an extra-long green to the street that’s closed…

    Prompts one to say, “What were they thinking?”

    Or to punctuate it a bit differently, “What? Were they thinking?”
